About AVT 300:
"What is the artsbus
requirement for students?"
- All AVT majors
must earn Artsbus credits by enrolling in AVT 300 in order to graduate.
- AVT Majors must have 1 AVT 300 credit for every 15 credits of
coursework taken at GMU, up to a maximum of 5 AVT 300 credits. In
practical terms, this means that if you are at GMU for five semesters,
you need five AVT 300 credits. If you are at GMU for less than five
semesters, you need one AVT 300 credit for every term you are enrolled.
If you are here for more than five semesters, you will be able to
spread out your five AVT 300 credits. However, you can take more
than one AVT 300 credit per semester, if you need to, in order to
have the requisite number of credits for graduation. But, this is
discouraged.
"How will AVT
300 work, in terms of getting on the bus?
-
You must have a ticket to board the bus:
- Enrolling in AVT
300 offers you the opportunity to ride on the artsbus, but does
not guarantee you a ticket. You must claim a ticket before Sept
15th to be guaranteed a ticket for a trip. Seats are limited on
each trip, so in order to get on the trip of your choice, you must
act in a timely fashion.
- When you enroll in AVT 300, your name will be on a class
list, available at the box office at the Center for the Arts (703-993-2787)/
Show them your student ID, and they will give you a ticket to board
the bus for the trip of your choice (providing the tickets for that
trip have not already all been taken).
- You will still need to sign a risk release form, and give it to
the bus boss to get credit for having made the trip. If you are
enrolled in AVT 300 for more than one "credit," it will
show up on the class list.
"Can I still buy tickets
the regular way at the box office?"
Yes. But, If you want
Artsbus credit, enroll in AVT 300.You can purchase tickets for family
or friends from the box office.
"How is my attendance
on the bus verified for the graduation requirement ?"
- the risk release form is proof of
participation, and is collected on the bus
Risk Release Agreement Forms
are available at
the box office, or in the rack outside of C200 College Hall,
or as a download here risk

credit will only be granted during the semester in which the trip
was taken, without exception. Link to "student information"

and are for 20 minutes.

Yes.
"Can I keep my
things on the bus while I am in New York?"
Personal Articles, including food, may
be left on the bus while you are in NYC.
"Do I need to plan
?"
YES. Use this site's links to view what is
going on in museums and galleries, to obtain maps and to review
the bus schedules. You will be given a printed guide to shows, reviews
and maps on the bus.
"Where can I get
printed information about artsbus trips?".
Information about exhibitions & events
in NYC can be obtained from the rack outside of the Office of Art
and Visual Technology, C200, College Hall. A list of recommended
exhibitions, reviews, directions, and maps for a self-guided gallery
tour will be distributed on the bus.
"I don't know my
way around the galleries. Are there tours?"
Artsbus encourages each traveller to explore
New York on their own. However, free tours of art exhibitions in
commercial galleries and museums throughout the city will be offered
during the first two hours in NYC. These tours are led by GMU professors
of art and art history and by other arts professionals. The tours
vary in location and content for each trip, depending on the interests
of the guides, and will be announced on the bus.
"How much money
will I need?"
Your should bring no less than $50. You might
spend far less. But, this is New York. A buying spree at Tiffany's
will set you back, big time. Museums cost between $5 and $18. Buses
and Subways between $2 and $7. Food, between $ 10-25. Always have
$20 for an emergency taxi ride if you are running late.
"Does Artsbus offer
an overnight option?"
Artsbus no longer offers an overnight bus.
About Independent Travel:
"Can I travel to
New York on my own?"
Yes. But, you will
still have to enroll in AVT 300 and pay the $50 fee. There is an
administrative cost to adding your artsbus credit to your transcript.
To find out the requirements for getting credit for independent
travel to NYC and DC, visit the "student information"
section of this web site.
"What if I can't go to New
York?"
We recognize that there may be circumstances
that would make a trip to New York impossible for a student. But,
you will still have to enroll in AVT 300 and pay the $50 fee if
you do the Washington DC Alternate Assignment. There is an administrative
cost to adding your artsbus credit to your transcript. to find out
the requirements for getting credit for independent travel to NYC
and DC, visit the "student information" section of this
web site. In fairness
to those who make the investment of time and money to go to New
York, the local assignment will require an equal amount of time
as a trip to NYC and will have a more substantial written component.
The assignment will change during the course of the semester to
reflect the changes of shows in the area.
